My Husky Won't Eat: What's Actually Going On

December 9, 2023 7 min read

Huskies are one of the few dog breeds that will voluntarily skip meals. Here's what I learned about why they do it and what actually helps.

If you just Googled “my husky won’t eat” in a panic, take a breath. There is a very good chance your best buddy is completely fine. Huskies are one of the only breeds that will skip meals on purpose. Most dogs inhale their food the second the bowl hits the floor. Huskies look at the bowl, look at you, and walk away. It can be alarming if you’re not used to it.

Stud did this to me constantly with kibble. I remember the first time he refused his dinner I thought something was wrong, but then remember from reading the Huskies books that this was in there. He just was not interested. Then about an hour later he wandered over and ate the whole thing like nothing happened.

The thing most people don’t know about huskies

Huskies were bred to run long distances on very little food. Sled dogs in the Arctic were not getting three square meals a day. They were conditioned to perform on minimal intake. That instinct is still in them. Their metabolism is genuinely different from most other dogs. They regulate their food intake based on how much energy they need, and when they are not burning much energy, they simply do not eat much.

This is completely normal and does not mean they are sick.

That said, there is a difference between a husky who skips a meal here and there and a husky who has stopped eating entirely for more than two days, is losing weight, seems lethargic or in pain, or is drinking a lot of water. Those situations need a vet visit, no question.

Why they refuse food

The most common reason is that they are just not hungry. It sounds too simple, but it is usually that straightforward. If your husky had a lazy day, did not run around much, and is generally healthy, they may just not need the calories.

The second most common reason is that you changed something. A new food, a new bowl placement, a new feeding schedule, a new person in the house, a new dog in the neighborhood they can smell. Huskies are sensitive to change in ways that catch people off guard. Something you would never notice can throw them off completely.

The third one is that you taught them to be picky, and it is not your fault because nobody tells you this. If your husky skipped a meal and you responded by offering something better, they learned that refusing the bowl produces a better result. You did not know. Now they know. Huskies are incredibly smart and they figure out patterns fast.

Hot weather will also kill their appetite. In the summer months Stud ate noticeably less. It was just too warm for him to feel hungry. This is normal for the breed.

What actually helps

There are a few solutions to this. After researching about kibble it really opened my eyes. It reminded me of processed food for humans. Take what I say with a grain of salt because I am no like others.

Lets back up to the begging. Before Stud came home I did research. Looked like not all kibble was the same. I tried to buy him the best kibble. He never really enjoyed it. When I left kibble in his bowl he rarely ate when I put it down. Since that was the case we always left his bowl with food down. He grazed on it, but since I did the research I knew nothing would be better than cooked whole foods; chicken, fish, steak, etc.

Whenever I bought meals I would just buy extra and cook extra. He would never refuse to eat those meals. He would chomp those down instantly. When he did not eat home made meals I knew something was wrong.

I started to get into the habbit to just meal prep for him like I would for myself. Cook in bulk, portion it out, and store it. It made things easier and ensured he always had something healthy and delicious.

Exercise before meals is also something that we always did. Similar schedule as me. A tired husky is a hungry husky. He never sat around an entire day so this was never an issue for us.

As mentioned above look at the food itself too. Dry kibble quality varies enormously. Some cheaper foods are high in fillers that huskies do not digest well and they seem to know it. I am not saying you need to spend a fortune, but if you are feeding a low grade food and your dog is consistently turning it down, that is worth paying attention to.

Stud’s Food, Schedule and Costs

This is how it actually worked in practice. Not by week, just a rolling rotation. Chicken for three days, fish for two, then two days of red meat that rotated through different cuts. Seven days, then repeat. The red meat changed each cycle depending on what was available and what looked good. The fish was usually salmon, but sometimes I would get white fish or something different for variety.

Salmon is by far the most expensive part of this. Costco membership was really for Stud. Stud got roughly 2 to 2.5 percent of his body weight in food per day, which is a standard starting point for whole food feeding.

When to actually worry

If your husky has not eaten anything for more than 48 hours, call your vet. If they are eating but losing weight, call your vet. If the refusal came on suddenly and they seem off in other ways, lethargic, not drinking water, vomiting, diarrhea, call your vet. Trust your gut. You know your dog. Missing a meal is normal. Something feeling wrong is different.

Tooth pain is something people miss a lot. If your husky seems interested in food but then backs away from the bowl or drops food while chewing, get their teeth checked. It is not always obvious and they cannot tell you their mouth hurts.

The short version of all of this is that if your husky is healthy and active and just does not feel like eating today, you are probably fine. Put the bowl down. Walk away. Try again tomorrow.

Cooking For Huskies

It was a little more expensive around $200, you could do it for way less if you skipped the steak and fish. I think this route is worth it times a million. First it helped me stay on track with meal prepping and eating healthy myself. Then there is the fact he really enjoyed eating which brought me joy. Seeing him excited for meals made the whole process worthwhile. And I would also argue that it is way healthier for him than kibble. Also very interesting most dogs have horrible breath and yellow teeth. Cooking for him completely solved that issue. His breath didn’t smell at all and his teeth were always white.
